The digestion or decomposition of starch is completed in the colon.

Explanation:

  • Starch decomposing starts in the mouth. When we chew our food, the salivary gland secrete an enzyme called salivary amylase. It start the breakdown of polysaccharides in starch.
  • The food then reaches the stomach, where it is treated with the stomach acid, which stops the action of the salivary amylase. After the food is passed to the duodenum, where the pancreas release pancreatic amylase. This enzyme break the polysaccharides into disaccharides.
  • Lactase, Sucrase and Maltase are released in the small intestine. It breakdown the disaccharides to monosaccharides. The starch that survived the upper digestive juices are then fermented by the bacteria in the colon or the large intestine.
