n contrast with both log phase and stationary phase cells grown in undepleted medium, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was shown to accumulate large amounts of starch following nutrient starvation under phototrophic, mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions. This accumulation was clearly independent of plastome gene expression but depended on de novo cytoplasmic protein synthesis. Quantitative changes in enzyme activities associated with starch metabolism were detected in crude extracts from nutrient starved cells.
