The highest number of wells found in India are in states of north India, particularly in states of Uttar Pradesh, followed by Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, etc.

EXPLANATION:

  • India is still an agrarian country in which majority of its population is still engaged in agricultural sector and also methods of farming are still very traditional and not have been mechanized, so people are still dependent on traditional methods for irrigation, one such method is use of wells.
  • Wells can be dug only in areas where adequate groundwater is found and not in areas where groundwater is found in great depths.
  • So, areas, where wells are most abundantly found, are in northern plains of India where majority of perennial rivers flow and they have abundance of groundwater and wells are dug.
  • Groundwater is easily accessible but, it is not case in peninsular parts of India where the groundwater is found at great depths, so digging of wells will not be a good idea for water usage.
