Operating System is installed and stored on the hard disk. As hard disk is a non volatile memory, OS does not lose on the turn off. But as the data access from the hard disk is very, slow just after the computer is started OS is copied into RAM from the hard disk.

the heart line (sometime cold the hard disk) is the main storage device in your computer. like RAM can be added to and change and like ROM it is non-volatile but it is slow if you have files and folders in your computer are stored in hard drive the operating system is also store in hard drive
