Answer:

Suppose the teacher said to the student, “ which is your book?” . In that case the indirect speech of the sentence would be — The teacher asked the student which his book was .

Rules of narration applied —

1.Change of the reporting verb ‘said to' in to ‘asked' as the reported speech is a question.

2. Removing the inverted commas and connecting the reporting speech with reported speech with the help of the question word 'which’ itself . As per the rule the connector 'if’ or 'whether ’ is used only when the reported speech question is a yes / no type question i.e. questions beginning with helping verbs but in case w-h type question, the question word itself becomes the connector as per the rule of Indirect Narration of English Grammar .

3. Change of person —’ your’ refers to the second person i.e. the student here and it's in relative case so the personal pronoun in relative case for the student would be ‘his’ .

4. Change of interrogative sentence into assertive sentence in indirect narration so the verb 'is’ changed into ‘was' because the reporting verb ‘ said' is in past to be used after the subject i.e. which book .
