Where potato and tomato brought to India by foreign invaders?
Answers
According to Dr KT Acharya in the book “A Historical Dictionary of Indian Food”, potatoes were fist accepted by Europeans. The Dutch introduced the culture of potatoes on the slopes (terraced like stories one above another) of mountains in Dehra Dun around 1830 AD. Then potatoes got cultivated in the plain regions of India too. British spread their farming.
Most probably tomatoes were grown in India for the British in Bengal during 1850 to 1880AD. That is according to Dr KT Acharya in his book.
According to another source the Portuguese had introduced potatoes and tomatoes along with many other food items in India after the 16th century. They were brought to the ports Calicut, Cochin and Goa through the ports. The reference : Indigenous Culture, Education and Globalization, Critical Perspectives from Asia from Springer publishers.
