The electric impulse when travels from one neuron to other it has to travel through a small gap called synapse where the chemical substance called neurotransmitter is released  so that the signal can go for onward transmission.

Synapse is a microscopic gap between a pair of adjacent neurons over which nerve impulses pass when going from one neuron to the next is called a synapse......
