Explanation:

Mahesh Dattani’s play ‘Where there is a will’ brings out the happenings in a patriarchal Gujarati family.

Hasmukh Mehta heads the family and is a very rich businessman who hardly has any feelings for his family which comprise his wife, son, and daughter-in-law.

He is not happy in his marriage and is in a relationship with Kiran Jhaveri. He always finds fault with everyone and in order to have a control on everyone also executes a will to that extent.

He names Kiran Jhaveri, the trustee of the will and so she comes to live with Hasmukh’s family after he is killed by his heartless daughter in law Preethi. Hasmukh doesn’t want to go and stays on as a ghost.

Kiran is an intelligent lady and she makes everyone see the right in things and act accordingly. Under her guidance, all the family members come together as one happy family and do well in the business too.

Hasmukh sees that all of them are happier without him and doesn’t like it. He doesn’t want to stay there anymore and goes up the tamarind tree.
