Kalpana Chawla was born at Karnal in India. She is called as Indian American because she is of Indian Origin but she had a citizenship of USA too.

Kalpana Chawla born in Karnal(haryana)of India..
She is known as Indian American because she went to America for master degree and became one of there citizen and married to a flight instructor of America.
