Mahatma Gandhi undertook a fast unto death in 1932 in protest against the Communal Award by the British Government. The Communal Award granted separate electorates in British India to different communities in India like the Forward Caste, Lower Caste, Muslims, Sikhs, and Untouchables. Mahatma Gandhi saw this as an attempt by the British Government to divide India along communal lines. He undertook the fast first in Yerwada Central Jail where he had been imprisoned and then in Poona.
The result of the fast was that the British government withdrew the Communal Award. Mahatma Gandhi arrived at an agreement with B.R. Ambedkar, called the Poona Pact, under which there was a single Hindu electorate with Untouchables having seats reserved within it. Electorates for other religions like Muslims and Sikhs remained separate.
