Shehnai was traditionally played only on ceremonial occasions like wedding. Bismillah Khan brought the level of shehnai to the stage level. More people came to know about it and it was now played also in competitions and different programs .

In past, shehnai was a part of naubat or traditional ensemble in nine instruments on royal courts. It is very important that it is used only at the time of weddings and in temples. Ustad bismillah khan gets the credit for bringing this instruments on the classical stage.
