Dutch presence on the Indian subcontinent lasted from 1605 to 1825. Merchants of the Dutch East India Company first established themselves in Dutch Coromandel, notably Pulicat, as they were looking for textiles to exchange with the spices they traded in the East Indies.

Originally, during the 17th century, the main purpose of the Dutch to come to India was trade, exploration and colonization. But eventually they got interested in the Asian spices, especially from the southern parts of India and gained monopoly over the spice trade (overtaking from the Portuguese).
By 1598 the Dutch were sending out numerous trading ships and in March 1599 Jacob van Neck's fleet became the first to reach the Spice Islands of Indonesia. In 1602 the Dutch government sponsored the creation of the United East Indies Company in an effort to stabilize profits in the Dutch spice trade and form a monopoly.
Dutch, however, were more dominant in Indonesia than in India.
