The narrator was travelling to Virginia and it is as follows:

  • The narrator and his family left Virginia as freedom was announced and his step-father did not belong to the same owners as him.
  • Thus, the narrator's mother moved with the family to West Virginia to live with her husband.
  • The little clothing and household were in their carts and all the children walked the greater portion of the distance which was several hundred miles.
  • They even cooked over logs of wood outside and slept in the open air while they were travelling to Virginia.
  • Thus, the narrator’s family walked hundreds of miles from Virginia to West Virginia with the few possessions that they had with them.
  • Also, the journey was tedious and painful. They had to sleep in the open air and cook over a log fire out of doors.
