Whether the volume decreases or increases after melting of ice?

Melting of ice Results in a DECREASE in Volume..
It is a general phenomenon that if we increase temperature, volume will increase. This rule applies to almost all substances. Water is an exception to this rule because it shows deviations from this. When ice melts, it's volume should increase but due to abnormal properties, it actually decreases. This happens up to 4 degree centigrade. The reason behind this is the cohesive forces. As temperature of water increases its cohesive forces gets stronger, so volume decreases. This happens upto 4 degree centigrade. After that water follows normal rule. You can easily observe this by putting ice cube in a glass of water below 4 degree centigrade, the ice will float due to low density.

when water reached 0°C it becomes ice and its volume get increased due to the formation of cage like structure in water molecules [due to hydrogen bonding].
but when the ice start melting the cage like structure breaks up and water molecules start entering the vacant spaces causing decrease in volume but this only happen till it reaches 4°C after that the volume start increases as in every liquid happens on heating.
