Sodium has a greater atomic radius than magnesium because it has fewer protons than magnesium. What this translates to, is that the overall pull on the electrons surrounding the sodium nucleus is less as compared to that in magnesium which has more protons than sodium with similar number of electrons. The great nuclear charge on the magnesium electrons gives it a smaller atomic radius than sodium.
