(i) People were afraid to travel by London
underground railway because they thought they were menace to health. A newspaper reader warned the public of compartments full of smoking pipes, fuel atmosphere, which was a mixture of sulfur, coal, dust, and fumes from the gas lamps.
(ii) Many people called the underground railways as iron monsters, which added to the mess and unhealthiness.
