whhy does lincoln want his son not just to read books but also to reflect on the eternal mystery of mature?

This is because nature's exposure would introduce his son to various new things such as observation and many more. Nature is always caring and an stress reliever. He wants his to know about the world and nature as much as he knows about his books that he read.
