The party that was influential in the Hill State movement in Meghalaya was the Hill State People’s Democratic Party. Under the leadership of (Late)Mr Hoping Stone Lyngdoh, the party finally achieved this milestone in 1970 when Meghalaya gained semi-autonomous status. People refer him as "Ma-Hoping" out of love and respect.
