Franz was reluctant to go to school but even then he decided to go. While in his way, he saw the heavy crowd in front of bulletin board which was usually used to display news regarding to the war. Franz was curious to know what was there on the bulletin board but he refused because he was already late.

On that strange day, at school Franz came to know the reality. \bf{The \:order \:passed \:from \:Berlin}\bf{was \:to \:prevent \:French \:language}\bf {and \:apart \:from \:this \:only \:German}\bf {language \:would \:be \:taught \:in \:the}\bf {schools \:of \:Alsace \:and \:Lorraine.} This order became a thunder clap to Franz. Franz was already very weak in his native language, French. He felt extremely sorry for his unconsciousness.

Answer:

The announcement made by M Hamel that there was an order from Berlin to stop teaching French, and that this was their last French lesson, seemed to be a thunderclap to Franz. He would no longer be able to learn French, his mother tongue.
