The mid-day meal program is the Government of India's school meal program aimed at improving school children's nutritional standing nationally. The program offers free lunches during working days, sponsored by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and the National Child Labor Project Colleges, for primary and high school girls, local government assisted bodies, the Education Guarantee Scheme and other creative education centers, Madarsa and Maqtabs. The program has its roots in the period of pre-Independence, when the British administration launched the midday meal program in '1925 in Madras Corporation'. On '15 August 1995', the Indian Government initiated the National Program for Primary Education Nutrition Support (NP-NSPE). The objectives of the scheme are:

• Improve primary education effectiveness and thus reduce poverty by enhancing children's nutrition status.
• Attract deprived children in schools, in particular girls from Dalits and tribes of Adivasi, thereby increasing participation, reducing drop-off levels and promoting women's empowerment with literacy;
• Encourage a sense of unity and secularism in various religions and cultures.
