There are various agents which are mainly responsible for the formation of stalagmite as well as stalactite.
On the cave floor or in a pile, usually more calcite are left by the water from the end of the stalactite.
And this usually results in the formation of stalagmite.
So, stalagmite is very similar to a cone shape.
But sometimes a column or pillar is formed by them.
The main characteristics of these two things is that they usually are found in pairs.

Answer:
- Groundwater is responsible for formation of stalactites and stalagmites.
- In areas of limestone, the alkaline water seeps at the top of the limestone caves. When this water evaporates, minerals get deposited at the bottom and at the top of the limestone caves. As its effect, stalactites and stalagmites are formed there.
