Ethanol (C2H5OH) is used in cough syrups and tonics.

Ethanol is a good solvent.

It is most commonly used in medicines because it is an excellent solvent, which in a sense is better than water to keep the other ingredients dissolved in the right liquid form and it gets diluted in some cough syrups.
