The Allotrope of carbon BUCKMINSTERFULLERENE has a cage like structure.

The C60 allotrope was named buckminsterfullerene in recognition of the US architect Buckminster Fuller who designed geodesic dome with similar structure. It Is also called buckyball, footballene and soccerballene. The C60  Fullerene has a network of polyhedral structure containing Pentagon and hexagon rings. It contains 12 five membered ring and 26 membered rings.

It melts at a lower temperature (1180°C) than diamond and graphite. It is a poor conductor of electricity like diamond. It is readily soluble in non polar solvents.
It is used for the preparation of Diamonds, Nanomaterials, transistors rectifying diodes, photodiodes , photovoltaic and photo refractive devices. It is also used as an efficient inhibitor of HIV enzymes which causes AIDS.
