Among Ag+, Hg2+ and Hg22+ the one which forms complex ion with NH4OH is - Ag+ .

  • Ag in the form of halide like AgCl react with aqueous ammonia (NH3 in H20 that is NH4OH)

  • so ,the reaction is -

AgCl + NH4OH —> [Ag ( NH3)2]1+ + Cl- + H2O

  • The compound formed after AgCl is dissolved in aqueous ammonia means NH3 in H20 , it shows that the aqueous ammonia have NH4+ and OH- ion.

  • As , AgCl is white colored ppt when it dissolved in Aqueous ammonia it formed colorless solution.

  • This thing explains why above complex is formed.
