Which archaeological test is considered as “the measuring rod of antiquity”?
Radiocarbon dating is considered as the "measuring rod of antiquity".
Archaeological tests are done in order to find out the correct dates and age of any object found during the exacavtaions. atahese are the unique source of information about the historical choronology.
The Archaeological test are of two kind:
1. Relative Dating
2. Absolute Dating
Relative Dating
It developed earlier when Archaeologists started the excavations but these are less reliable as compared to other.
Under this different methods are included like Stratigraphy and Seriation.
In Stratigraphy, The site is covered layer after layer, like a cake, due to year old declination. The most older site is beneath the other and that's how the relative dating is done by the Principle of Super imposition.
During Seriation, the excavated materials are analyzed statistically and thus based on the frequency, they put to choronological order.
Absolute Dating
Radiocarbon Dating or Carbon 14 dating is the famous absolute dating techniques used by the Archaeologists. It was invented by Willard Libby during 1940s for which she won a Nobel prize.
Through this, the age of organic matter is determined through the use of radioactive Isotope of Carbon.
Dendochronology is also absolute dating method through which the age of wooden excavated items are determined.
Through Absolute Dating methods are more reliable but expensive too.
