China has built a very powerful manufacturing industrial machine that will get stronger because of the need to support the increase in internal demand for goods as well as the need to support the continued demands from other countries. While the past approach was to use low-cost labor in China, the new factories, many of which are managed by outsiders, use increasing levels of automation, which will change the employment patterns in China.

It is significant that the level of automation is related to the levels of quality of the products (i.e., generally, the higher the automation, the higher the quality). While China is going through an evolution of its industrial base, there is still the need to continue finding employment for its 700 million eligible workers. China, however, needs to take into account the following points.

There is the aging of the workforce, which will require employment patterns to evolve based on the skill base and level of training of workers. Older workers need higher pay than young, single workers because they have to support their families. Also, there is the expectation that as workers become more skilled and better trained, they will want higher pay.

The level of education in China is increasing, and meaningful employment must be provided to university graduates. A large number of university graduates already are having problems with obtaining positions that are consistent with their expectations. China will need to build the industrial base that can employ the new graduates and provide promotion opportunities as they become more skilled. There will be the need to provide more opportunities for engineers, scientists, accountants, etc.
