sea turtles have a salt gland to rid their bodies of excess salt. This gland empties into the sea turtles’ eyes. The secretion of salt and fluid makes them look as if they are “crying” when they come ashore. These “tears” also help keep the eyes free of sand while females dig their nests.

The salt gland is helpful to remove excess salt from the body.

It is seen in several organisms like rays sharks sea birds reptiles etc.

It helps in maintaining the salt balance in the body through excrete the excess salt in the body and allowing to drink saltwater.

This occurs through active transport through the sodium-potassium pump.

It is found on the basolateral membrane which transports excess salt through the blood into gland and helps to excrete as concentrated solute.
