Meanders are typical landforms found in this stage of the river. A meander is a winding curve or bend in a river. They are typical of the middle and lower course of a river. This is because vertical erosion is replaced by a sideways form of erosion called LAIn the middle course of a river the gradient decreases (it flattens out) and the discharge increases. This is due to the fact that many more tributaries have joined the main channel, leading to an increased volume of water, as well as the fact that the high level of gravitational potential energy which was found in the upper course of the river has been converted to kinetic energy.TERAL erosion, plus deposition within the floodplain.
