Some of the lakes are a gift of nature to Rajasthan, while others have been carved out in the earth's surface by the efforts of man to be the source of the drinking water for the civilization and were used as a reservoir to conserve rainwater.
Lake Pichola, Udaipur
This is perhaps the oldest and one of the largest Lakes of Udaipur and one of the most beautiful lakes in Rajasthan. Lake Pichola is an artificial freshwater lake which was created in the year 1362 A.D. and named after the nearby Picholi village. The 2¼ miles long and 1¼ mile wide lake was started in the 14th century, however, it was completed in the 16th century by Maharana Udai Singh, founder of Udaipur.
The lake is overlooked by the grandiose City Palace complex and houses 4 islands on it, namely Jag Niwas (the much-renowned Lake Palace), Jag Mandir, Mohan mandir and Arsi Vilas. Only a few lakes in the world can boast of so many beautiful structures all at one place and thus, Lake Pichola is certainly not worth a miss.

Distinct from sweet water lakes of Rajasthan, Sambhar Lake is a saline water lake and is popularly known as Salt Lake of Rajasthan. In fact, this is India's largest inland salt lake also regarded as a 'Gift from Thar desert' and a major source of salt production in India. The lake is 22.5 km long and its width varies from 3 to 11 km.
The lake is fed by several freshwater streams mainly from river Mendha and Rupangarh. This saline lake is situated at a distance of 65 km from Jaipur on Phulera rail-route and is divided by a 5.1 km long dam which helps in salt making.
Ana Sagar Lake, Ajmer
Ana Sagar Lake is a superbly gorgeous man-made lake which is situated to the north of the city of Ajmer in Rajasthan. It is the biggest Lake in Ajmer, with a depth of maximum of 4.4 meters and circumference of almost eight miles 8 miles (13 km) it can store about 4.75 million cubits of water.
It was constructed during 1135-1150 AD by damming the river Luni by Arno Raj Chauhan who was also known as Anaji, which gives the lake its name. Many years later, Daulat Bagh Gardens near the lake was laid down by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Emperor Shah Jahan contributed to the expansion by building five pavilions, known as the Baradari, between the garden and the lake.
Fateh Sagar Lake, Udaipur
Fateh Sagar Lake is yet another breathtaking lake in Udaipur created around the 1680s. It has three islands including the Udaipur Solar Observatory and Nehru Park.
