the major physiographic divisions of india are :-
1. himalayan mountains
these are young fold mountains made sedimentary rocks consists loftiest mountains and deep valleys.
width is 400km(west) and 150km(east)
himalayan mountains are divided in three parts - himadri, himachal and shiwalik.
himadri are also called great and inner himalayas and their height is upto 6000m.
himachal are called middle himalayas. main mountains here are - kullu, pirpanjal, dhauladhar, kangra etc. height - 3700m-4500m.
last one is shiwalik, their height is between 900-1100m.
2. northern plains
the main three rivers for the formation of northern plains are indus, ganga and brahmaputra. and hence the soil found here is alluvial soil(very fertile soil)
total area of northern plain is 7lakh sq.km and it's 2400km long and 240-320 km broad.
this area is very populated and agriculturally developed because of it's fertility
3. peninsular plateau
it's also called table land and composed igneous and metamorphic rocks. it was formed by the breaking down of gondwana land.
here black soil is found which is highly beneficial for the production of cotton.
it has broad and shallow valleys and rounded hills.
peninsula plateau consists two broad divisions, the central highlands and the deccan plateau.
4. indian desert
indian desert is west to aravali hills and occupies a major part of rajasthan.
the land found here is very sandy and covered with sand.
the climate is here very arid and there's very less rainfall.
this region is very dry and luni is the only river flows here.
5. coastal plains
india have two coasts.. one is western coast between western ghats and arabian sea and another one eastern coast between eastern ghats and bay of bengal.
western coasts are less wide as compared to eastern coasts and they are unbroken. the largest peak found here is anaimudi.
western coasts are broken and the largest peak here is mahendragiri.
6. islands
there are two islands - lakshadweep islands in the arabian sea and andaman and nicobar islands in the bay of bengal.
lakshwadweep are composed of small coral islands.
andaman and nicobar islands are bigger in size as compared to lakshadweep islands and are more scattered.
