ANS: (i) Any elevated area, such as a mountain or an upland, which separates two drainage basins is known as water divide; for example, the water divide between the Indus and the Ganga river systems. Ambala is located on this water divide. The Western Ghats form the main water divide in Peninsular India.

The major water divides in India are as follows :

Himalayas, Aravali Range, Vindhyan range, Satpura Range, Westarn ghats are the major water divides of India.

For example.....

1. Western Ghats separates the west flowing rivers meeting the Arabian Sea from the east flowing rivers meeting the Bay of Bengal.

2. Vindhyan range separates the Ganga drainage basin and Narmada drainage basin.

3. Himalaya separates the river flowing in Himalayan system from the rivers flowing in trans Himalayan range.
