Basavanna or Basaveshvarawas a Kannada poet, philosopher, social reformer and statesman during the 12th century, who introduced the Shiva-focussed Bhakti movement. He lived during the reign of king Bijjala I of the Kalyani Chalukyaru Kalachuri-Dynasty in Karnataka, India. Basaveshvara spread social awareness by way of his poetry, prevalently known as Vachanaas. He rejected social and gender discrimination, rituals, and superstitions.

    Basaveshvara advocated several reforms such as he eradicated superstitions and blind beliefs. He detested mistreatment of low-born uneducated innocent people by high-born educated Brahmins under the excuse of hollow religious rituals. Basaveshvara rejected caste system, and his Bhakti Doctrine denounced the notion of low-born and high-born and that all people equal having equal religious rights.

   Basaveshvara advocated that all human beings were equal, regardless of caste, and that all forms of manual labour was equally essential He also denounced atrocious ordeals or penance to body to receive the grace of God, and avidly held a belief of one God. According to him only ardent devotion can lead to the grace of God. Basaveshvara also advocated for equal religious and social rights for women.
