Article 39 A of Constitution of India states that the State should secure that operation of the legal system adjusts justice on the basis of same chances and should in general give free legal aid by suitable legislation in any other way to confirm that chances for contenting justice are not rejected to any citizen on account of economic or disability.

National Legal Services Authority has been established under the Legal Services Authorities Act 1987 to promote free Legal Services to weaker sections of society and organize Lok Adalats for settlement of disputes.

NALSA located at Delhi.  

State Legal Services Authority has been constructed to give effect to policies and ways of NALSA and give free legal services to people and arrange Lok Adalats inside States.  

State Legal Services Authority is operated by Chief Justice of the respective High Court who is Patron-in-Chief of State Legal Services Authority.

Every District District Legal Services Authority has been made to provide Legal Services Programmes in the District.
