The first estate represented the Clergy.
The second estate, the Nobility.
The third estate represented all the other French citizen, the poorest
population.
Some of them were "bourgeois", mostly salesman or merchants.
However the most part were peasants.
The Ancien Regime was an unfair political system where only the two first
estates had powers.
The third estate paid the taxes and had no rights.
They could not climb the social ladder as all the privileges were determined by
birth.
