The formula defining the energy levels of a Hydrogen atom are given by the equation: E = -E0/n2, where E0 = 13.6 eV (1 eV = 1.602×10-19Joules) and n = 1,2,3… and so on. The energy is expressed as a negative number because it takes that much energy to unbind (ionize) the electron from the nucleus.

An electron of hydrogen or any, in a lower energy level can absorb a photon and gains energy of that photon and moves into a higher energy level. An atom cannot remain in a excited state, it transits to lower state spontaneously by emitting the energy in the form of a photon.
