a)White Southerners believed women should not do certain chores and gentlemen should not do manual labor.
Explanation:
- President Abraham Lincoln was shot five days after the end of the Civil War. He died on 15th April 1865 and Andrew Johnson, Vice President of the Republic, took office. It was up to him to reunite the nation. A Southerner, Johnson favored the southern States' readmission into the Union as soon as possible. In his former Confederate countries, he nominated military governors that held full power until the organization of new civil governments.
- The requirements of the newly emancipated slaves were hardly given a thought . Shortly before the war ended, Congress set up the Office of the Freedmen. The former slaves were provided with food & medical aid. It also set up free men's schools. By 1870, over 4000 of such schools in the South were attended by over four million Black children and adults.
- White Southerners feared that the South 's agriculture economy would collapse if freedmen did not work for the white landowners. A rumour spread amongst the liberal people in the "last months of 1865": on Christmas Day the federal govt. would grant each ex-slave family vast tracts of land. Though some confederate lands had been confiscated & given to freed Slavs, the federal govt never intended to do so on a huge scale. However, with the expectation of their own land, Blacks declined to accept work agreements white landowners for the new year
- The first Black Codes of 1865 helped create all these prejudices, economic concerns, & fears. These codes included special laws which were only applicable to black people. Mississippi's first Black Code was tough and reinforcement. South Carolina only followed a little harder, but more comprehensive code in regulating the lives of 'colur people.'
