It has been said that gymnosperms first arrived sometime in the Upper Paleozoic Era during or before the transition from the mid or late Devonian Period to the early Carboniferus Period—estimated to be some some 390 to 319 million years ago. This is determined by the carbon dating of fossils of some early gymnosperms. The exact number of years ago, of course, cannot currently be determined, even with our modern methods of dating.
