As a literature student, I am suggesting you these two books, none of them are nonfiction, but you'll know why later:
Siddhartha by Herman Hesse
Buddha by Osamu Tezuka
The first one was written by a Nobel Prize winner in Literature, so you could experience how a German like Hesse interpret the philosophy and way of life of Buddha in his Western point of view.
The last one, I would say, is the magnum opus of Osamu Tezuka, the God of Manga. Written in the form of graphic novel, you surely would have a easier time visualizing the story and still understand the values delivered.
Since I'm not a student of history nor theology, unfortunately I cannot give a solid reference if you are asking for authentic biography of Buddha.
Cheers.
