The Bay of Bengal Branch of the Southwest Monsoon causes rainfall in the  Meghalaya Plateau region.

  • The branch of the Bay of Bengal hits the Myanmar coast and south-east Bangladesh areas. The Arakan Hills along Myanmar's coast deflect a substantial part of that branch towards the Indian subcontinent.
  • Under the considerable influence of the Himalayas, the branch further breaks into two, and reaches the thermal low in northwest India.
  • One branch travels west along the plains of Ganga to as far as the plains of Punjab. The other branch travels north and northeast up the Brahmaputra valley causing heavy rainfall.
  • The sub-branch reaches the Khasi and Garo, Meghalaya hills, extended with an opening towards the sea in a funnel shape.
  • There is a sharp rise in the tropical winds coming from the Bay of Bengal causing heavy rainfall .
