The epic Buddhist poem ‘Mahavamsa’, composed by a Buddhist monk in the sixth century AD contains several references to the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka. It is written in the Pali language, an early language used mostly in Buddhist scriptures and texts.

It gives a detailed account about Buddha’s visits to Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka), the genealogy and lineage of Kings of Ceylon, history of spread of Buddhism in Ceylon and about events in Ceylon.

Emperor Ashoka belonged to the Mauryan dynasty and ruled almost the whole of Indian subcontinent between 268 and 232 BC.
