Dietary fiber comes from plant-based foods that contain cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, pectin, mucilage and gum. our digestive system lacks the enzymes to break down these food components, and they travel through our gut without being digested

Humans are unable to digest cellulosebecause the appropriate enzymes to breakdown the beta acetal linkages are lacking. (More on enzyme digestion in a later chapter.) Undigestible celluloseis the fiber which aids in the smooth working of the intestinal tract
