Catalysts used in the given reactions :

A catalyst is a chemical substance which is used to either increase or decrease the rate of a reaction, without taking part in the reaction itself.

1. 2KClO₃ + MnO₂ + (150- 300°C) → 2KCl + 3O₂

• The catalyst used to increase the rate of the above reaction is manganese dioxide (MnO₂).

2. 4NH₃ + 5O₂ + red hot Pt → 4NO + 6H₂O

• A red hot platinum wire is used as a catalyst in the oxidation of ammonia to nitric oxide and water vapour.

• If the platinum wire is not heated, it would not catalyse the reaction.

3. 2H₂O₂ + Pt → 2H₂O + O₂

Or, 2H₂O₂ + MnO₂ → 2H₂O + O₂

Or, 2H₂O₂ + PbO₂ → 2H₂O + O₂

Or, 2H₂O₂ + Cu → 2H₂O + O₂

• Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen takes place in the presence of catalysts like platinum, or manganese dioxide powder, or lead (IV) oxide, or copper.
