  • It was discovered by Christian de Duve.
  • These are known to have more than 60 different enzymes.
  • It acts as a waste disposal system of the cell by digesting waste materials of cell.
  • They contain more than 50 membrane proteins.
  • Enzymes of lysosomes are made by RER (Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum)
  • They are single membrane bound structures.
  • Their size varies from 0.1μm to 1.2μm.
  • It helps in repairing of plasma membrane.
  • Their hydrolytic enzymes can break many kinds of biomolecules.

Lysosomes

When cell gets damaged, lysosome may burst and the enzymes digest their own cell. Therefore lysosomes are known as the Suicidal bags of a cell.

Additionally:-

  • Christian de Duve discoved Lysosomes

  • Lysosomes are membrane-bound, dense granular structures containing hydrolytic enzymes responsible mainly for intracellular and extracellular digestion.

  • The word “lysosome” is made up of two words “lysis” meaning breakdown and “soma” meaning body
