A type of Endoplasmic reticulum; which has a smooth surface because it don't have any ribosomes on it's surface which are the main cause of a rough surface..

Explanation:

One of the most important and main functions of Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum is detoxification, which is the removal of all the toxic materials such as (metabolic wastes or drugs).

These detoxification processes all done, by the Smooth endoplasmic reticulum present in the liver (which is a organ pretty much known for it's detoxification and metabolizing of drugs).

It contains enzymes that catalyze a number of reactions ; that can make lipid-soluble drugs and metabolic wastes into water-soluble, so that these (drugs and waste) can easily be expelled out of the body .

Well to perform this kind of process; SER doubles it's Surface Area (doubles the amount of cells, it normally has), so that a lot of detoxification, could take place; inside that doubled surface area, it convert the lipid soluble (water insoluble) drugs and waste in to Water Soluble ( lipid Insoluble), which can now easily be eliminated or excreted out of the body.

After all this job done, the extra SER cells (which i mentioned earlier, the double amount, the extra amount) is now needed to come to it's normal state; and that happens with the destruction of those cells; by a process called Autophagocytosis.
