We use calcium oxide  (cao) to white wash on the walls. But when we add water to it it releases some amount of heat and the walls begins to crack.

✨Element A is calcium (Ca). When it reacts with water, it forms calcium hydroxide. Thus, compound B is calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2], which is used in white washing.✨
