Answer.
Propene does not react with alkaline KMnO4 solution.
CH3-CH=CH2 + KMnO4 + H2O ———> No reaction
While alkenes decolorize the pink colour of acidified dilute solution of potassium permanganate.
Propene decolorizes the pink colour of KMnO4 solution and forms propene glycol that is colorless compound.

Propane ( CHCHCH ) and propene ( CHCH=CH ) can be distinguished by the bromine water test .
In this test , we add a few drops of bromine water to the test tubes containing propane ( CHCHCH ) and propene ( CHCH=CH ) .
If the bromine water remains brown , the test tube contains propane ( CHCHCH ) .
And , if the bromine water becomes colourless , the test tube contains propene ( CHCH=CH ) .
- Propene is an unsaturated compound , having a double bond in the compound . The bromine water reacts with the unsaturation and changes its color during the reaction .
