The fact that some Chl a, the main chlorophyll found in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, is always present in A. marina, has thus been suggested to indicate that Chl d alone cannot drive water splitting and that it is essential that there is some Chl a in the reaction centre for the operation of PS II
