The capitals of the Presidencies such as the capitals of Bengal, Madras, and Bombay, were called the  ‘‘Presidency Cities”. Following are the main features of these cities:

1. These cities performed multi-functions, they covered, warehouses, major ports, homes and offices, educational institutes, museums, libraries and camps etc.

2. A large number of people lived in these cities, for instance, the population of Bombay was nearly 1,500,000 in the year 1941 as compared to the population of 1872 that was approximately 644,405. These cities merged political and economic duties for the entire country.
