Maharaja Ram Singh of the Royal Family of Jaipur ordered that the whole city was to be painted pink in the year 1876 in order to welcome Queen Victoria and Prince Albert who were visiting Jaipur. For Indian political leaders, this was a great opportunity to strengthen ties to the British monarchy and thus gain personal acquaintances with the British Royal family. This tradition has been diligently followed by the residents of Jaipur over the ages and presently compelled by law to maintain the pink colour in the city’s buildings and important structures.
