The committee appointed in 1946 to allot seats to each province and princely state or group was called 1) the Cabinet Mission.
What was the Cabinet Mission?
- A cabinet mission, i.e., a group of politicians were formed to discuss the transfer of authority of India from the British government to Indian leadership.
- Its members were Clement Attlee, Lord Pethick-Lawrence, Sir Stafford Cripps, A.V. Alexander and Lord Wavell.
What was their plan?
- They advocated for a three-tiered administrative model for British India. Federal Union as the top tier, groups of provinces as the middle and individual provinces at the bottom tier.
- They proposed three groups namely, A, B and C for North-west, Easter and central India respectively.
Hence, the Cabinet Mission came to India in 1946.
